Reading Face Grain Without Cathedrals

I'm finding that interesting things happen when I have a camera set up in the shop all the time.

As I was preparing to joint the stock for the Shave Horse I came across a board that didn't have cathedrals on it's face. Since the camera was already rolling I gave a quick lesson on finding the grain direction.
