About the event

Make your own Shavehorse and get a great introduction to making Staked Furniture.

The Shavehorse is to chair making what the workbench is to casework. If you're looking to make some chairs you'll enjoy the work so much more riding this comfortable horse with a rock-solid grip. Once the horse is complete we'll use it to shape the legs for a simple staked sawbench. You'll find this bench a handy a piece of furniture to have alongside the horse when shaping parts.

This 6 day class will take you through to process of building and customizing a shavehorse to suit your needs as a green woodworker. Each student will choose a bench on the first day of class and get to work turning the stack of prepared part blanks into a beautiful and functional tool. Along the way we'll use a mixture of basic power tools and hand tools to cut joinery and shape the parts. I'll show you how to safely complete each step using my tools as well as alternative methods so you can put them to use on future builds in your own shop. There will be time for demonstrations on sharpening hand planes and chisels as well as how to setup and sharpen a card scraper.

On the final day of the class I'll show you how to use your new horse as part of an introduction to chair making. In the course of building an attractive Staked Sawbench we'll demystify the process of layout and drilling compound leg angles, learn the advantages of round tapered tenon joinery and complete the process of glueing and wedging legs into a seat.

At the end of this class you'll head home with a Pin-Head Shavehorse, a lovely Sawbench and all the skills you need to get started making Staked Furniture.
